Establishing a skincare routine can be challenging. It’s especially difficult in the TikTok era, when everyone has seemingly helpful tips, tricks and trends. With so many new formulas entering the beauty market, it can be hard to keep up-even for beauty editors and enthusiasts.
First, it’s important to understand your skin type and that the skin itself is genetic, so whatever your current condition (acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea) may be from your birthline-this will ultimately determine which products you should incorporate into your routine. If you’re struggling to find a middle ground on where to start, here are some practical tips on how to layer your skincare like a true professional.
Step 1: Cleanser
Before going any further into your routine, everyone should use a cleanser. If you have oily skin, cleanse with an oil-based cleanser first, then a regular cleanser with a pH of no more than 5.6. Anything higher will damage your skin barrier.
Step 2: Serum
In the morning, your first choice should be a vitamin C serum to brighten and prevent sunburn, followed by a hyaluronic acid serum to retain moisture. In the evening, it’s safe to keep it simple and only use hyaluronic acid after cleansing.
Step 3: Moisturize
You can use the same moisturizer day and night. Make sure your moisturizer does not contain SPF at night.
Step 4: Facial Oil
If you use facial oil, a useful tip is to use it before your moisturizer as it is lighter in weight and helps the moisturizer penetrate the skin more deeply.
Step 5: Sunscreen
It’s self-explanatory, but yes – please wear sunscreen every day. Even if you’re at home, you may still be exposed to harmful rays.
